GEMMA SEDDON
The elements making this piece are from reclaimed materials. The base object being a cable reel the paint from The Paint Place. The decoupage illustrations and the map came from broken books and torn maps.
The piece demonstrates the beauty in the lost, once loved then discarded Items. I have chosen to distort the contents of the map as I find that this, is indeed, the issue that we, as a race are having. We have distorted views of our world and for some; there is a loss of knowledge for nature, feeling of compassion and understanding.
All of the nature images, on the top of the table, are circular, presenting the circle of life and our reliance on nature. Directly underneath is a golden plateau that the nature rests on with the central reel having the world broken and split.
The elements of gold and breakage is something for all to think of:
- Why do we value this golden material above others... Is it beautiful?
- Is it needed?
- Will it bring happiness / support in need / communication between loved ones and enemies?
- Is it that necessary or is it a clause of a divided distorted world that we are present in?
This object that holds beauty on the surface has a base of misunderstanding, and lack of understanding common material values.
The movement from trash to treasure is shown and presented to you as a movement that I have made, and I hope it will inspire others to seek value and create from waste also.
